US versus imperial gallons
A US gallon is 3.785 L; an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 L — 20% larger. This converter uses US gallons, which is what American recipes and fuel economy mean. If a British recipe says a gallon, multiply by 1.2.
Useful for large batches
- Stock pots are usually sold in litres; US recipes in quarts and gallons
- 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 16 cups = 3.785 L
- 5 gallons ≈ 19 L — the standard homebrew batch
- A 12-quart pot is about 11.4 L
Why precision matters here
At gallon scale, small percentage errors become litres. A 5% error on 10 gallons is half a litre — enough to change a brine concentration or a brewing gravity.
Metric recipes
Most of the world cooks in litres and millilitres. Converting a US recipe to metric is usually better done by weight: 1 gallon of water is 3.785 kg, and a scale handles that in one step.
